What to look out for

  1. A former royal residence and World Heritage property
  2. A strolling garden arranged around a pond
  3. Stone bridges, water and greenery

A royal garden experienced on foot

Shikinaen was a residence of the Sho royal family. It is a nationally designated special place of scenic beauty and a World Heritage property. Its strolling-garden layout is best understood by following the paths around the pond. Buildings, bridges and reflections shift as you move, making the walk itself part of the experience.

Alternate wide views with small details

Pause for a view across the water, then look more closely at stonework and planting beside the path. A bridge seen from the opposite bank feels different from the same bridge up close. For a history-focused day, combine the garden with Shuri while allowing separate time for each: the quieter rhythm here offers a useful contrast to castle gates and walls.
