Your travel notes

Brightly coloured fish, island ingredients and the aroma of local cooking make this market a rewarding stop in Naha’s shopping lanes.

What to look out for

  1. Fresh-food stalls on the first floor
  2. Okinawan dishes in the upstairs restaurants
  3. Shopping lanes around the market

Start with the ingredients

Established in 1950, Makishi Public Market has long served Naha’s everyday food culture. Its present building opened in 2023. Fish, meat and other fresh-food stalls occupy the first floor. Look at labels and ask stallholders about unfamiliar ingredients: seeing what goes into a dish adds another dimension to ordering Okinawan food later.

Connect the market with the surrounding lanes

Restaurants upstairs provide a natural next stop after browsing the stalls. Outside, shopping arcades and smaller lanes make the market part of a wider city walk. Approach from Kokusai Street, enjoy a meal, then continue towards Tsuboya for a different view of local craft and everyday life. Leave time to browse rather than treating the building as a quick shopping stop.
