Things to do

Your travel notes
Deep blue pools interrupt Shimoji Island’s limestone landscape, revealing a different side of the sea-shaped islands.
Toriike consists of two neighbouring ponds on western Shimoji Island. They are understood to have formed when parts of limestone caverns collapsed, and underwater passages connect them with the ocean. The site is nationally designated for scenic beauty and as a natural monument. Knowing about the hidden connections adds meaning to the visible water, rock and coastal vegetation.
The dark water and sharply defined rock give Toriike a different character from Miyako’s pale sandy shores. Follow the permitted viewing route and compare the two ponds rather than stopping for a single photograph. As part of an Irabu and Shimoji island drive, this stop offers a chance to consider geology alongside coastal scenery. Take your time and follow the marked route.
One suggested way to include this stop in a walk or drive.
