Your travel notes

Cross turquoise water towards Kurima Island, combining a scenic bridge drive with the white sands around Yonaha Maehama.

What to look out for

  1. A 1,690-metre island crossing
  2. Views near Yonaha Maehama’s white sands
  3. A drive linking beach and island scenery

A road between two islands

Kurima Bridge opened in 1995 and stretches 1,690 metres between Miyako Island and Kurima Island. Pale shallow water and deeper blues form different bands around the crossing. The surrounding views include Yonaha Maehama’s white beach. Looking at the bridge from a permitted coastal location adds a perspective distinct from travelling across it.

Connect the beach with an island pause

Begin with time beside Yonaha Maehama, cross the bridge, then leave room for a break on Kurima Island. Light, tide and weather change the colours, so appreciate the view available on the day. Take photographs from places where stopping is permitted, never from a parked vehicle on the bridge. Noticing the positions of the beach and islands gives the drive a sense of place beyond one photograph.
