Things to do
Banna Park

Your travel notes
After the coast, discover Ishigaki's green interior. Banna Park combines viewpoints and woodland walks for a different perspective on the island.
What to look out for
- Viewpoints using the terrain around Mount Banna, overlooking the city and sea
- Walking areas with pine woodland and subtropical plants
- Five zones for scenery, nature observation, play and other activities
See the island from above Banna Park extends around Mount Banna, which rises to 230 metres north of Ishigaki's city centre. From higher ground, vegetation, streets and the distant sea become parts of one landscape. The viewpoint zone includes the Emerald Observatory, a migratory-bird observation point and Minaminoshima Observatory, each with a different setting.
Choose one viewpoint first and take time to look at the clouds, the greenery and the horizon. Visibility changes with the weather. Even when distant islands are difficult to see, the layers of trees and open sky provide a contrast to the coast.
Choose a purpose, rather than the whole park The park has five zones covering walking, viewpoints, its main facilities, nature exploration and activities or playgrounds. A visit can focus on a view, a woodland walk or family play. Because the grounds are extensive, select the entrance that suits your destination before setting off.
On a nature walk, listen for birds and notice the shapes of unfamiliar leaves. What you see depends on season and conditions, so enjoy the surroundings without expecting a particular species. Keep to designated paths and observe quietly.
Ideas for your visit
One suggested way to include this stop in a walk or drive.
- Find your destination on the map: Choose a viewpoint or play area and its most suitable entrance.
- Enjoy one zone slowly: Combine time for scenery with a manageable walk.
- Decide what comes next: Continue to another zone only if weather and energy allow, or return to your island drive.
