The 43rd Naha Hari Dragon Boat Festival
The 43rd Naha Hari, praying for good catches and safety at sea, takes place at Naha New Port on May 3–5, 2017.
Hari dragon boats were introduced from China around 600 years ago during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Hari races take place at fishing ports across Okinawa during Golden Week, though most other communities use traditional small sabani fishing boats.
Naha Hari races use dragon boats carrying about 42 people, making this Okinawa's largest Hari event. Visitors can also try a boat ride and experience the atmosphere even without joining the races.
Okinawa's rainy season usually begins around Golden Week, and the ringing Hari gongs are said to herald the arrival of full summer.
Two stages, large and small, host varied performances including local comedy, live music by Okinawan artists and dance, according to the daily schedule.
Thrilling Dragon Boat Races
The powerful races are Naha Hari's greatest attraction. Each boat is 14.5 m long, 2.1 m wide and weighs 2.5 tons. A crew of 32 rowers, 2 gong players, 2 steersmen and 6 flag bearers and other members compete over a 400 m return course.
Enjoy 2,000 Fireworks at Night!
After the exciting races, 2,000 fireworks light up the sea from 8:40 to 9:00 p.m. Many visitors take their viewing positions five minutes early for this 20-minute highlight.
