The 47th Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival
From October 7–9, 2017, the Guinness-recognized great tug-of-war takes place around Kokusai Street, Route 58 and Onoyama Sports Park in Naha.
Okinawa's largest traditional cultural event, the Naha Great Tug-of-War preserves the traditions of Naha's four districts from the Ryukyu Kingdom era.
More than 15,000 people pull a rope 186 m long, weighing 40.22 tons and measuring 1.58 m in diameter. It is a breathtaking sight!
Anyone can participate regardless of gender, age or nationality, attracting many visitors every year.
Don't Miss the Hatagashira Parade Before the Tug-of-War!
The Hatagashira Parade raises the spirits of the eastern and western teams before the powerful tug-of-war. Be sure to watch!
Participants take turns carrying towering standards 7–10 m tall and weighing 40–60 kg. Their brave efforts and the flags waving high in the breeze are an impressive sight.
The tug-of-war then continues for about 30 minutes.
Kokusai Street Joins the Celebration
Usually busy with souvenir shops and shoppers, Kokusai Street is transformed during the festival!
Community groups, traditional performing arts associations, students and groups from around the world present colorful performances in the folk and traditional arts parade on Kokusai Street.
The Okinawan sun is still strong, so remember to stay hydrated while watching.
Enjoy the Beer Festival Too
Food stalls surround the grounds at Onoyama Park, offering a distinctive Okinawan festival experience.
Although it is early autumn, Okinawa still feels like summer. An ice-cold beer at the lively festival is especially refreshing!
Magnificent fireworks fill the night sky, helping you forget everyday fatigue and feel refreshed.
