The 40th Anniversary Ginowan Hagoromo Festival
The 40th Ginowan Hagoromo Festival takes place at Ginowan Seaside Park's multipurpose plaza on September 30 and October 1, 2017.
One of Ginowan's major events, the festival began as a prayer for the city's prosperity and draws on Morinokawa's legend of a celestial maiden bathing during the Ryukyu Kingdom era.
Highlights include Eisa, King Satto's historical parade, a kachashi dance contest and fireworks!
Travel Back to the Ryukyu Kingdom
About 300 participants in colorful costumes portray King Satto, the queen and local lords, parading along Kankaimon Street.
The parade vividly depicts the life and legends of King Satto, a late-14th-century ruler before the Ryukyu Kingdom's unification, whose mother is said to have been a celestial maiden.
Everyone Can Join the Fun
The Tobinsu Haninsu Kachashi Contest is another main highlight of the Ginowan Hagoromo Festival.
Individuals and groups of all ages, genders and nationalities take part.
Participants wear imaginative, colorful costumes and showcase lively dances.
Kachashi means “stirring” and is an Okinawan hand dance used to share joy at festivals and celebrations.
The kachashi contest accepts public entries, so join if you are interested!
Large Fireworks Light Up the Sky
The festival closes with a spectacular fireworks display!
Around 1,800 fireworks are launched over approximately 20 minutes.
The large 30 cm-shell fireworks, uncommon in Okinawa, are particularly impressive.
